Students often ask me "how to condition forearms and shins so it's not so painful when we block the attacks."
Practicing regularly leg defenses against kicks and 360 forearms defenses shall eventually make you less sensitive to pain. However for those who want to improve faster here is a training method that I use for myself. Remember, it's essential that you don't hurt yourself, so start with light power. You can also increase the padding. Yesterday evening was fighting class in Yokohama studio. This class focuses on sparring and fighting. All self-defense situation can potentially turn into a street fight with the aggressor (s). The fighting class is meant to prepare students for such situation.
Sunday morning, just for fun, we made a quick fight scene on defending against a attack with a stick. Not yet Jason Bourne but working on it :-) This is a short video of one of our class in Nakameguro. In Krav Maga we train to defend against all sort of attacks from all possible positions and specially from position of disadvantage. Gakugei Daigaku studio on Saturday afternoon. Saturday afternoon in Gakugei Daigaku studio. Here I am teaching a defense against a double hands wrist grab, and I am demonstrating a soft defense, that means a defense that doesn't use strikes or techniques that could create damages to the attacker. A soft defense (or soft response against an attack) can be used in situations when we feel that we are not really in danger and we estimate that it is not necessary to hurt the attacker: thus the objective is to release the grip and move away from the attacker.
Inside forearm defense. The inside forearm defense against a straight knife stab to the mid-section followed with a straight punch to the face as counterattack is a very effective defense but it is a difficult technic and requires a lot of practice to be executed safely in real situation. Thursday we practiced intensively this technic with advanced students. The attacks are executed at full speed and power so the defender can execute the defense under "realistic condition". The important points of the technic are: hand (forearm) defense, body defense, stepping to the side and strong straight punch to the face while controlling the hand holding the knife. Safety in training: to protect his hand the attacker wears a boxing glove on the hand holding the knife and the defender wears a boxing glove on the hand doing the counterattack. In Krav Maga we practice the application of technics in different situations. Here we show the application of a defense against a knife stab while the defender is seating on a chair. In real self-defense situation the attack often occurred when we are not ready and therefore in a position of disadvantage. Hence, this kind of training help us better prepare for real situation. |
